One of the greatest pleasures in my life has been writing books to share my love of ancient and medieval history with readers. I was a university professor for many years and always saw writing as an extension of my classroom teaching. Now that I’m retired and living in a small town in New England, I spend most of my time walking the hills with my dog and sitting at my desk happily writing as I watch the seasons change outside my window.

I did my graduate work in Classics and Celtic studies, earning my Ph.D. at Harvard in 1994. I’ve taught at colleges both large and small but was always blessed with wonderful students who have gone on to do such great things with their lives.

I hope you enjoy reading my books as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them.
